ScreenPal vs. Snippet Tool
DID YOU KNOW...
That you can screen record using two different programs at the same time? I did not! But now I do.
This week, my HRD class is exploring screencasting using a program called ScreenPal. It's a very interesting program that you can download and use for free. Without creating an account, you can record up to 5 minutes at a time. With a free account, you can record up to 15 min. With a paid account, you can record an unlimited amount. We used the guest method allowing up to 5 min.
I was used to using the PRT SCR button on my PC laptop to bring up the snipping tool menu. That's a simple way to take screenshots or screen recordings. It's limited in extra features other than just recording your screen. But it can get the job done. I was looking forward to trying out ScreenPal to see what it can do. What I was pleased to find out is you can actually use both at the same time! WHAAATT?
NOTE: Blogger only allows videos with a 100mb limit. If your video is larger than 100mb, upload to YouTube instead and insert a link.
Using ScreenPal to test out Snipping Tool:
Note: while the Snipping tool is recording, you cannot see its menu in the recording.
What the Snipping Tool recorded during the ScreenPal demo:
Note: You can see the ScreenPal timer in the lower left corner, indicating ScreenPal is still recording.
Using Snipping Tool to show ScreenPal interface:
Final Reflection - I learned that the Snipping Tool created video files that are MUCH larger than ScreenPal. So I ended up uploading everything to YouTube. I also learned that any videos you upload directly into Blogger goes towards your total storage limit within Google, which is only 15GB across all platforms. So choose your video upload method wisely.
After testing both methods, I do believe ScreenPal will be a superior method from an EdTech perspective. Especially since you can storyboard and it has so many more robust features. I look forward to exploring more of what it can do.
